Our group stayed in Nyamata for two weeks where we worked with two organizations: AVEH and CECHE. Nyamata is a smaller town filled with many things to do and some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I got to know Nyamata really well, like where the good type of donuts are in the market, so it was hard to leave. We said our goodbyes on Saturday to many people, starting with the children from AVEH in the morning, CECHE, our friend Divine, and the students at the school.
The work during our two weeks in Nyamata was challenging, but it was so rewarding and special to me. I got to help others and in return I learned so much about Rwandan culture and language.
I will miss shopping in the market, visiting Nyamata high school and playing soccer with students. Most importantly, I will miss the children at AVEH who brought a smile to my face every morning.
Yesterday, we had a four- hour drive from Nyamata to Musanze and we played card games, bopped to music and slept a lot. It was so interesting to observe the change in landscape throughout the drive. When we arrived, I instantly felt the temperature change because Musanze is 1000 meters higher than Nyamata. I noticed the busyness in Musanze and how many more tourists there are here. For dinner Monday night, we went out and ate pizza. As much as I love rice and beans, it was a good change.
From Kigali, to Nyamata and now Musanze, I appreciate all of the differences Rwanda has to offer.
