To Nyamata

This post features student writing.

After three days of traveling and adjusting in the capital, Kigali, we finally arrived at our community service destination, the small city of Nyamata last night.

Today, the first of July, is Independence Day in Rwanda, so the pace is more relaxed than usual, with few people working. We woke up early to instant coffee, plantains, and bread. After deciding to walk to the home and center for disabled children, AVEH, we strolled through town instead of taking a van. For the whole day, the group split between interacting with the children and transporting dirt for the making of a new septic tank. Around lunchtime, tired from three hours of work, we returned to our guest house via van. A filling lunch and relaxing siesta followed. Later in the afternoon, the group explored the nearby hills in which we saw many gorgeous views of Nyamata and baby goats. We had a hearty dinner and tucked in early, tired and fufilled from our first day of service.
