I️ sat up in my bed as the 5:30 am alarm rang, preparing myself for a morning of Golden Monkey searches. Even though it was a very early morning, I️ was wide awake and ready for the day. After weeks of doing community service, we were finally able to explore the volcanoes and see the animals of Rwanda.
The drive up to the National Volcanoes Park was very exciting. I️ was eager to see the Golden Monkeys. Once we were in the park, the ranger, Odile, told us some information about the Golden Back Monkeys and how to behave in the park.
We initially walked through the maze of a bamboo jungle, a different path everywhere we turned. The whole way to the Monkey spotting location, I️ kept stepping in elephant poop! Odile told us that we may see elephants or gorillas on our walk. While walking through the park, the bamboo leaves began to shake. I️ immediately looked up and saw three, chubby golden monkeys; one of them munching on bamboo leaves and the other two quarreling. The monkeys scattered once they heard our footsteps and we followed them to the top of a small mountain. Everyone in the group relaxed on the grass and observed the monkeys and the breathtaking view.
Today was a very calm and relaxing day. Seeing the monkeys and the beautiful landscape of Rwanda made me reflect on this trip and how rewarding it was.
