June 28 & 29: Kigali

After a brief orientation to get to know your leaders and fellow students, begin your program with an introduction to the history and culture of Rwanda, seen through the lens of its vibrant capital city. Explore Kimihurura, a green and quiet part of the city with fine views of downtown.

June 30 – July 14: Nyamata

Travel by private bus to Nyamata, a smaller city south of Kigali. Spend the next two weeks working on projects with a pair of local organizations: Foundation AVEH Umurerwa and the CECHE Foundation. At AVEH, a home for severely disabled children, complete construction projects at their campus and help care for their residents. At CECHE, build specialized chairs from recycled materials for the same population. Balance your work projects with exploration of Rwandan life, practicing Kinyarwanda, preparing meals, and getting to know our hosts.

July 15 & 16: Musanze

Travel by private bus to Musanze, a city in the northwest of Rwanda. Stay in a guesthouse run by longtime friends of Putney, and begin to reflect on your work in Nyamata. Take a day trip to Butaro, where we visit students at the University of Global Health Equity and with physicians at the Partners in Health flagship clinic. Explore the Musanze covered market and discuss traditional crafts with local artisans.

July 17 & 18: Red Rocks

Spend the next two days in the lush, green country of Volcanoes National Park, where we stay at an environmental center and hike the mountains with local guides. Explore golden monkey habitat and learn about the environmental challenges facing the native wildlife.

July 19 – 21: Kigali

Return to Kigali for the final three days of your program. Meet with representatives from various public health and reconciliation organizations to recap what you’ve learned about Rwanda and its efforts to rebuild after the genocide. Present your final project in front of your fellow students and enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

July 22: Travel Day

Enjoy a final morning in Kigali preparing for your journey home, then travel to the airport for your overnight return flight.
